The sun came out this week. I put on my sunglasses and wore a T-shirt without a jacket. As the temperatures rose, so did my energy level.
I know you’ve felt this kind of spring energy, too. As the seasons change, so do our energy levels, emotions, cognitive function, and creative flow. Ever noticed how you feel more social in summer but crave quiet, introspective hibernation in winter? It’s not just in your head—science backs it up.
Spring Energy
Spring is all about renewal. Longer days and blooming landscapes increase serotonin levels, boosting mood and motivation. Studies show that exposure to nature enhances divergent thinking, essential for creativity. Feeling stuck? Spring is the perfect time to start new projects, brainstorm fresh ideas, or dive into a hobby. Push out of your comfort zone. Research also suggests that time spent outdoors, especially in green spaces, can enhance problem-solving and inspiration.
When the sun comes up, I feel excited and a little squirrely, but instead of fighting that energy, I’m going with it. Matching my energy to the energy requirements of the things I want to accomplish in my day.
I’m resetting my morning routine to capture that energy. My waking energy is calmer and more relaxed, and that’s when I sit at the desk and make stuff or write through difficult stretches of the book. I leave time around lunch to get outside and restore. Afternoons are for creative brainstorming—and getting out of the office.
Spring is the Time
As we launch into spring, now is the time to set your seasonal intention. Spring is the time to embrace new ideas, use the energy to advance existing projects.
Here are some ways to get to it.
Start a new project or revive an old idea.
Spend time outside to boost creativity and mental clarity.
Try freewriting or brainstorming to generate fresh ideas
Take on activities that encourage exploration and curiosity
Use the natural momentum of the season to set creative goals
Try something you’ve always wanted to do.
Establish a morning routine that nurtures your mind, body, spirit.
Manage and minimize the things in your day that feel limiting or rigid.
Plant something. Try an herb—I love growing basil—or a bright flowering plant.
By tuning into nature’s rhythms, we can harness each season’s strengths and create more ease and energy.
Embrace your Spring energy and note what emerges. And have fun.
No matter what is going on in the world, it’s OK to enjoy life.
